Hi, I’m Vanessa Dougherty, founder, lead artist, and instructor at Restorative Permanent Makeup (RPM) and RPM Institute.
With more than 25 years of experience in makeup artistry, tattooing, cosmetic permanent makeup, and medical tattooing, my career has always been driven by a passion for art and helping people feel confident in their own skin.
My journey began at 18 as a makeup artist, where I discovered my love for enhancing natural beauty. I later expanded into tattooing and permanent makeup, combining my artistic background with technical skill to create natural, realistic results.
Working alongside plastic surgeons introduced me to the transformative impact of medical tattooing. I began specializing in scar camouflage and 3D areola tattooing, helping patients restore details changed by surgery, injury, or illness. These experiences shaped my approach to restorative work and reinforced my belief that tattooing can be about so much more than appearance.
In 2022, I opened my own studio in beautiful La Jolla, California, where I provide personalized cosmetic and medical tattooing services in a welcoming, supportive environment. Through Restorative Permanent Makeup (RPM), I help clients feel more like themselves again. Through RPM Institute, I share the knowledge, techniques, and real-world experience I've gained throughout my career with artists who want to grow their skills and pursue a meaningful career in restorative tattooing.
Whether you're visiting RPM as a client or joining RPM Institute as a student, my mission is the same: to use art to make a meaningful difference in people's lives.

About our San Diego Permanent Makeup Clinic
Founded by Vanessa Dougherty in November 2021, our office is located in the beautiful La Jolla Cove, steps away from the ocean on Prospect Street.
Our studio is a former dental office that was built in the 1960's. Vanessa has dedicated much of her time and energy into updating and refurbishing the office while also keeping certain elements of the mid-century modern style. This space still holds much of its original charm, and its walls are adorned with original paintings by the owner, Vanessa Dougherty.
Our office has a relaxing yet clean and clinical vibe that is sure to make you feel comfortable and welcome.
